| A New Era Begins, in Arizona |

As many of you may already know, Clay Webster Performance Horses began a new chapter in December. After packing up 15 horses, three trailers, our suitcases and house, we left Calgary early, early Friday morning November 28. The destination, Cave Creek, AZ, to check out the winter show circuit in warm weather! Our new business partnership with J. Drummond Farms will then bring us back to Regina, Saskatchewan, for the 2009 Canadian show season.
Along with the help of Sherry Menard and Ashley Perrin, Clay, Tyler and I each took turns driving the rigs south. With the new freightliner, we had to follow strict transportation rules and check in at each weigh scale along the way. (There’s at least one in every state). This also meant logging in the hours each drivers spent behind the wheel of the big rig. Add those stops to over 2,600 kms of travel and breaks along the way to feed and water our horses, and it all made for an excruciatingly long drive.
For some reason, both Ashley and I each got stuck driving a rig just prior to passing through Las Vegas. However, there was no time to see the city of lights while piloting the two-horse (Ashley) and, the six-horse through Vegas (timid me), for either of us. We had to concentrate on changing lanes, hairpin-turn overpasses and Vegas traffic.
All three trailers reached Cave Creek at 5:00 am Sunday morning, November 30. Tired and weary, Clay and Tyler unloaded horses in the dark and a welcoming, ambient 15-degree weather. Not bad for 5 am! Sherry, Ashley and I organized them into stalls. Once all the horses were checked in, fed and watered, all five humans stumbled into bed. It’s difficult to attain true rest when you’ve been sleeping in a truck for two and a half days!
The first few hours of the afternoon were used to acquaint ourselves with the new property, the Rockin H Ranch, in the daylight and to organize a program with Mario. By 1:00 pm, the temperature had already risen to almost 23 degrees Celsius – and we were dressed too warmly! However, Clay, Tyler and I continued organizing horses and feed and prepared the truck to leave again: Clay was due in Oklahoma City for December 2, to coach Nancy Pratch in her first National Affiliate class.
Sherry headed off to the Phoenix airport, to fly home to Edmonton. And the remaining four of us reluctantly jumped back in the truck for another 18-hour drive. Thankfully this time, without air-brake licenses, neither Ashley nor I were required to drive any longer.
